Unplugged in the Park is back - Park Tavern - Now through October

June 3rd, 2008

Unplugged in the Park

When: Sundays starting at 7pm

Where: Park Tavern

How much: Free

buddyfeed says: In years past, 99x’s Unplugged in the Park has been a place to see incredible bands play acoustic sets in an incredibly small venue. Shows such as Ben Kweller, Band of Horses, and Pete Yorn have made in past years this one best events of the summer.  At first glance at the list of bands is ok, but none of them have the mass appeal that some bands in the past did. But it’s early and there are still a lot of dates to fill, so maybe we will be pleasantly surprised. Even if the lineup remains unchanged, I still highly recommend the event because there are not many places where you can go in Atlanta and get a free show on a Sunday in a place with as nice of a view as Park Tavern. As a note, one thing has changed since last year’ Unplugged in the Park.  99x, the organizer and promoter of last years event, is no longer a terrestrial radio station, instead now broadcasting online only and have decided to team up with Rock 100.5 to co-promoted the event. Who knows if this will have any effect on the types of band but we will just have to wait and see.  Enjoy the shows.

Virginia Highlands Summerfest

When: Friday, June 6, 2008, 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, June 7, 2008, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Artist Market closes at 7:00 p.m.)
Sunday, June 8, 2008, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m

How much: Free

Where: Virginia Avenue from North Highland to Park Drive

buddyfeed says: Full of local arts booths, food and music, this festival is a little more of a family friendly event then your standard springtime beer festivals. But don’t let that scare you away, the Virginia Highlands Festival still supplies you plenty of beer stands that can give you a nice buzz in the summer sun. The Saturday festivities kick off with a parade which might not be your style, but there is always live music to enjoy while you drink the afternoon away. After a few hours at the festival, it’s always a good time to stumble to a friends house in the highlands before wandering out to the bars to close out the night. Enjoy the festival.

Draft on Taft - Midtown off Charles Allen - Saturday, May 31st

May 28th, 2008

What: Draft on Taft

When: Saturday, May 31st

Where:
Corner of Charles Allen and 10th St

What time: 3pm - 10pm

Anaylsis - “All you can drink,” are some sweet words, but not easily pulled off.  Most of the time “All you can drink festivals” turn into long lines and sometimes even not enough beer.  But with the current weather outlook for Saturday being partly cloudy skies and this event only being $25 bucks, I think this event is totally worth a shot.  Also, couple that with the this is not the first year of this event and they should be well prepared for the crowds and most importantly, you getting drunk.  Keep it safe and don’t pee in anyones front yard. At least don’t pee on mine. Enjoy the event.

Flicks on Fifth - Technology Square - Georgia Tech - Wednesday June 11th

May 21st, 2008

With the help of a few sponsors and probably a few of our tax dollars, Georgia Tech is bringing to Midtown its spin to the weekly, outdoor summertime movies series . The series, Flicks on Fifth, will take place in Technology Square on Fifth street and will attempt to draw the younger crowd by showing recent hits like Superbad and the Bourne Ultimatum. Unfortunately since I’ve never been to this event, I can’t really speak much about the setup and the atmosphere. Either way, I think the fact that movies in this series are more recent hits and that it doesn’t explicitly say you can’t bring beer, will make this a nice alternative to this year’s Screen on the Green.  The movies start at sundown and you can find out more info here.

Cost: Free

Movie Lineup:

JUNE 11 I am Legend
JUNE 18 Horton Hear’s a Who
JUNE 25 The Bourne Ultimatum
JULY 9 Hairspray
JULY 16 Superbad
JULY 23 21

Dunwoody Beer Festival - aka the Parking Lot Beer Festival - 5/17

May 8th, 2008

The Dunwoody Beer Festival returns on Saturday, May 17th at Perimeter mall. This festival is no different from other beer festival in Atlanta, where you sit around with you friends and get drunk off a lot of beer served in small amounts while cover bands rock out mid 90’s hits. Now one thing does set the Dunwoody festival apart from the other festivals in Atlanta, it’s home is in a mall parking lot. Yes, that is right, there is nothing better than drinking your beer while searching for a nice piece of hot black concrete to find refuge. Now the festival is not all bad, it’s easy to take MARTA to if you feel like you are going to get drunk and if you underdress, well your only a few steps away from the mall where you can correct your error. I went last year and I had a good time but I just wish they would find a home that has some green grass.

Tickets - $30 in advance, $35 at the door

Inmanpalooza - April 26th - 3pm - 9pm - Inman Park

April 22nd, 2008

After a jaunt around the Inman Park Festival, you probably will need a few beers to wash down all that savory family fun and we have just the place to do that, Inmanpalooza.  Inmanpalooza is basically a block party that has occured over the last five years on the same weekend as the Inman Park Festival.  The festival is rich with bands, Sweetwater beer and BBQ and in years past has been a raucous event.  I’m sure it will probably be bigger and just as fun as years past, so stop on by the event runs from 3pm to 9pm in Inman Park.

Inman Park Festival - April 26th-27th - Inman Park..obviously

April 22nd, 2008

One thing that I love about Atlanta during the springtime is the sheer amount of outdoor festivals that are planned for each weekend.  We’ve already had the Dogwood festival and noew this weekend in Inman Park, we have the Inman Park Festival.  The festival is more focused around familys then you getting drunk but they will have bands, a tour of homes, refreshments, an art festival, and more.   If it’s nice, expect a lot of people an absolutely no parking.

Here is the schedule of events that will be occuring all weekend.

Screen on the Green lineup announced along with no alcohol

April 16th, 2008

Screen on the Green is going to be a lot different this year than in years past. First off, it won’t be held in Piedmont Park. Yes, thanks to the damn drought, another favorite outdoor park event has been relocated to Centennial Park. Next up, and this one is a biggie, there will be no alcohol allowed at the event. So now not only do I have to sit in Centennial Park but I also can’t be drunk. Wow, this isn’t looking like to much fun yet. Lastly, the movies. There isn’t actually that has changed from years past as the lineup includes: Jaws, Big Momma House, E.T. and Chicago. One twist though is that there will be a fifth movie that they are allowing the people to decide whether they want to see Back to the Future, Footloose and Rocky. You can vote on the Peachtree TV website. I’m sure the event still be a lot of fun but if I’m not allowed to drink with my picnic, then I’m not sure I want to picnic. I’ll leave it up to you decide.
