Unplugged in the Park is back - Park Tavern - Now through October

June 3rd, 2008

Unplugged in the Park

When: Sundays starting at 7pm

Where: Park Tavern

How much: Free

buddyfeed says: In years past, 99x’s Unplugged in the Park has been a place to see incredible bands play acoustic sets in an incredibly small venue. Shows such as Ben Kweller, Band of Horses, and Pete Yorn have made in past years this one best events of the summer.  At first glance at the list of bands is ok, but none of them have the mass appeal that some bands in the past did. But it’s early and there are still a lot of dates to fill, so maybe we will be pleasantly surprised. Even if the lineup remains unchanged, I still highly recommend the event because there are not many places where you can go in Atlanta and get a free show on a Sunday in a place with as nice of a view as Park Tavern. As a note, one thing has changed since last year’ Unplugged in the Park.  99x, the organizer and promoter of last years event, is no longer a terrestrial radio station, instead now broadcasting online only and have decided to team up with Rock 100.5 to co-promoted the event. Who knows if this will have any effect on the types of band but we will just have to wait and see.  Enjoy the shows.

Questlove (the Roots) DJ set - MJQ - May 23rd

May 16th, 2008

Questlove (drummer of the Roots) is coming to town next Saturday night (May 23rd) to DJ a three hour set at MJQ. MJQ is always a great place to suck down some PBR’s on a Saturday and shake your ass to some downright awesome hip hop, but add Questlove to the mix and you’ve got the makings for a bad ass night. So if you don’t already have plans for Memorial Day weekend then pick up tickets over at Ticket Alternative but remember to bring cash because that plastic money machine in your wallet won’t get you very far once you get inside.

My Morning Jacket - Fox Theatre - August 27th

May 15th, 2008

If you have never seen a My Morning Jacket show, then you have missed out. The atmosphere they create through the combination of Jim Jones’s voice echoing in your ears while wailing, distorted guitars pound you in the chest is a special feeling. Plus, combine their live show with a venue like the Fox and you are in for a special treat. Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10am.

Mike Ness - Variety Playhouse - May 9th

April 30th, 2008

Social Distortion frontman, Mike Ness, is bringing his Southern California infused, country style to Atlanta at the Variety Playhouse on May 9th. Not all fans might dig Mike Ness’s departure from his punk rock sound of Social Distortion but you must remember that Ness was turning out country records before the slew of punk rock veteran’s followed suit. Mike Ness is a legend, a bad ass and will put on a great show for you guaranteed.

500 songs for kids - Smiths Olde Bar - May 1st through May 10th

April 28th, 2008

500 songs for Kids is an annual ten day, five hundred band, five hundred song extravaganza at Smiths Olde Bar. In its second year, 500 songs for Kids knocked off the top five hundred songs of all time at last years event and this year will be performing the top 500 sing alongs of all time. The event is amazing to watch as bands pound through 5o songs a night with some that are memorable and some that are absolutely terrible. While performers are not released before each night, last year performers included Pete Yorn, Butch Walker, the Whigs and 497 more. Advance tickets don’t appear to be on sale but remember you can always buy tickets at the downstairs bar of Smith’s on the day of the show. I highlighly recommend checking this event out some time during its ten day run and warm up those vocal chords because you might get the urge to sing along.
